The Big Chill

Personally, I do love this soundtrack because it has all the classic hits but apparently my movie alter disagrees with the actual quality of movie. Mr. Richard has said more than once he feels like he’s living in the movie High Fidelity. It’s actually been forever since I’ve seen the movie as I am more a TV girl and don’t tend to re-watch movies. In the movie, Dick and Barry are talking about “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” (not on any of the actual soundtracks) when it’s immediately disqualified from their Top 10 Songs About Death because of its use in the movie.

The Big Chill is a 1983 American comedy-drama film directed by Lawrence Kasdan. It is about a group of baby boomer college friends who reunite after fifteen years due to the suicide of a friend. Kevin Costner was cast as the dead character Alex, but all scenes showing his face were cut.

Ten of the songs from the film were released on the soundtrack album, with four additional songs made available on the CD. The remainder of the film’s songs (aside from the Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”) were released in 1984 on a second soundtrack album.

Reunion

“Life Is a Rock (But the Radio Rolled Me)” is a 1974 song by an ad hoc group of studio musicians called Reunion, with Joey Levine as the lead singer. The lyrics are a fast patter of 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s disc jockeys, musicians, songwriters, record labels, song titles and lyrics, broken only by the chorus (over 90 shout outs on the 45 version I have with more on the extended album version).

The song’s outro quotes “Baby I Need Your Loving” by The Four Tops, “Celebrate” by Three Dog Night, and “I Want to Take You Higher” by Sly and the Family Stone.

It peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and reached No. 33 in the UK Singles Chart. The track was later covered by Tracey Ullman in 1984, and was featured in her album, You Broke My Heart in 17 Places.

As I mentioned above, the song name drops a lot. I won’t list out all of them, but here’s quite a good chunk of them:

Phil Spector

Carly Simon
Mungo Jerry
Smokey Robinson and the Miracles

One Heartbeat Just To See Her

It’s been over two years now since I saw Smokey’s modern day group, Human Nature with my mom and aunt. It was such a blast! I did look it up and Human Nature is still performing so if you get a chance, check them out! You can see some pictures using their tag at the bottom to see the original post.

The Tears Of A Clown

The Miracles were an American rhythm and blues group that was the first successful recording act for Berry Gordy’s Motown, and one of the most important and influential groups in pop, rock and roll, and R&B music history.

The most notable Miracles line-up included the Robinsons, Moore, White, Bobby Rogers and Marv Tarplin. Referred to as Motown’s “soul supergroup”, the Miracles recorded 26 Top 40 hits, seven of which were top 10 singles, and a number one single (“The Tears of a Clown”) while the Robinsons and Tarplin were members.

Following the departure of Tarplin and the Robinsons, the rest of the group continued with singer Billy Griffin and scored two final top 20 singles, a second # 1 hit, which topped the charts before the group departed for Columbia Records in 1977, recording as a quintet with Donald Griffin, where after a few releases, they disbanded in 1978.

In all, the group had over fifty charted hits by the time they disbanded. On the R&B charts, The Miracles scored 26 Top 10 Billboard R&B hits, with 4 R&B # 1’s. Bobby Rogers and Ronald White revived the group as a touring ensemble sporadically during the 1980s and again in the 1990s with lead singer Sydney Justin. Following White’s death in 1995, Rogers and Justin continued to tour with different members until he was forced into retirement due to health issues in 2011, dying less than two years later.

The Miracles have been awarded many top music industry honors over the years. In 1997, the group received the Pioneer Award at the Rhythm and Blues Foundation for their musical achievements. In 2004, they were ranked thirty-two on the Rolling Stone magazine’s list of The 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, retaining that same position seven years later, in 2011. Four of their hit songs were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Throughout their careers, the Miracles were also enshrined with honors for their songwriting by both BMI and ASCAP. After much controversy, the Miracles were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.

Cruisin’ With Smokey

William “Smokey” Robinson, Jr. (born February 19, 1940) is an American R&B and pop singer-songwriter, record producer, and former record executive. Robinson was the founder and front man of the Motown vocal group The Miracles, for which he also served as the group’s chief songwriter and producer. Robinson led the group from its 1955 origins as The Five Chimes until 1972 when he announced a retirement from the stage to focus on his role as Motown’s vice president.

However, Robinson returned to the music industry as a solo artist the following year, later scoring Top 10 solo hits such as “Cruisin'” (1979), “Being With You” (1981) and “Just to See Her” (1987). Following the sale of Motown Records in 1988, Robinson left Motown in 1990. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

Ever Had a Dream

We Are The World

I feel like this is another album I don’t really need to explain why I purchased it. Recorded the year before I was born, I still remember people talking about it when ever they talked Michael. Anyone who is anyone from the 80’s is on this one. I feel like if there was a zombie apocalypse or alien invasion and 100 years from now, somebody found this in our home and had to piece it all together, they’d have everything they’d need to know for the 1980s!

“We Are the World” is a song and charity single originally recorded by the supergroup USA for Africa in 1985. It was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian for the album We Are the World. With sales in excess of 20 million copies, it is one of the fewer than 30 all-time singles to have sold at least 10 million copies worldwide.

Awarded numerous honors—including three Grammy Awards, one American Music Award, and a People’s Choice Award—the song was promoted with a critically received music video, a home video, a special edition magazine, a simulcast, and several books, posters, and shirts. The promotion and merchandise aided the success of “We Are the World” and raised over $63 million for humanitarian aid in Africa and the US.
