I feel like WHAM!’s music videos are the epitome of the 80s – big hair, tight jeans, neon. I love them!! We used to have dance parties in high school and put on the “oldies” from the 80s and bust a move in the most ridiculous way. Hope you enjoy them as much as we did!

Eat It, Beat It

I decided to break up the Weird Al posts because my dad actually had two of my favorites! I thought it would be interesting to take these two and also list the original songs that were parodied. First up, Beat It!

beatit

Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” has been cited as one of the most successful, recognized, awarded and celebrated songs in the history of pop music; both the song and video had a large impact on pop culture. The song is said to be a “pioneer” in black rock music, and is considered one of the cornerstones of the Thriller album

The music video for “Beat It” helped establish Jackson as an international pop icon. The video was Jackson’s first treatment of black youth and the streets. Both “Beat It” and “Thriller” are notable for their “mass choreography” of synchronized dancers, a Jackson trademark.

The video opens with the news of a fight circulating at a diner. This scene repeats itself at a pool hall, where gang members arrive via foot, forklift, and out of sewers, while the video’s titular song begins to play. The camera cuts to a scene of Jackson lying on a bed, revealing he’s the one singing contemplating the senseless violence. The singer notice rival gangs and leaves. Michael Jackson dons a red leather J. Parks brand jacket, and dances his way towards the fight through the diner and pool hall. A knife fight is taking place between the two gang leaders in a warehouse. They dance battle for an interlude of music until M arrives; the singer breaks up the fight and launches into a dance routine. The video ends with the gang members joining him in the dance, agreeing that violence is not the solution to their problems.

To compare the original with Weird Al’s parody, the video for “Eat It” is styled as a shot-for-shot remake of Jackson’s video, but with elements being parodied in various silly ways that are more fitting with Eat It’s lyrics. For example, two rival gang members brandish a spoon and fork at one another during the song’s bridge, then begin to fight over a rubber chicken as the solo guitarist’s instrument explodes in his hands.

So. Much. Whitney!!

After her music career started to climb, Whitney started receiving movie offers, including ones to work with Robert De Niro, Quincy Jones, and Spike Lee; but Houston felt the time wasn’t right. Houston’s first film role was in The Bodyguard, released in 1992 and co-starring Kevin Costner. Houston played Rachel Marron, a star who is stalked by a crazed fan and hires a bodyguard to protect her. USA Today listed it as one of the 25 most memorable movie moments of the last 25 years in 2007. Houston’s mainstream appeal allowed people to look at the movie color-blind.

The film’s soundtrack also enjoyed big success. Houston executive produced and contributed six songs for the motion picture’s adjoining soundtrack album. Rolling Stone said it is “nothing more than pleasant, tasteful and urbane”. The soundtrack’s lead single was “I Will Always Love You”, written and originally recorded by Dolly Parton in 1974. Houston’s version of the song was acclaimed by many critics, regarding it as her “signature song” or “iconic performance”. The single peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for a then-record-breaking 14 weeks, number one on the R&B chart for a then-record-breaking 11 weeks, and number one on the Adult Contemporary charts for five weeks. The single was certified 4× platinum by the RIAA, making Houston the first woman with a single to reach that level in the RIAA history and becoming the best-selling single by a woman in the US.

Let’s Get Weird In Here

Alfred Matthew “Weird Al” Yankovic (born October 23, 1959) is an American singer-songwriter, musician-parodist artist, record producer, satirist, music video director, film producer, actor, and author.

Weird Al is known for his humorous songs that make light of popular culture and often parody specific songs by contemporary musical acts. Since his first-aired comedy song in 1976, he has sold more than 12 million albums (as of 2007), recorded more than 150 parody and original songs, and has performed more than 1,000 live shows. His works have earned him three Grammy Awards and a further 11 nominations, four gold records, and six platinum records in the United States.

Yankovic’s success comes in part from his effective use of music video to further parody popular culture, the song’s original artist, and the original music videos themselves, scene-for-scene in some cases. He directed later videos himself and went on to direct for other artists. In addition to recording his albums, Yankovic wrote and starred in the film UHF and The Weird Al Show. He has also made guest appearances on many television shows, in addition to starring in Al TV specials on MTV.
