I’m A Diamond Girl

Maybe not the one Seals & Croft had in mind, but I am kind of. I was born in April so it’s my birthstone but in addition to that, it’s my mom’s maiden name. Her side of the family is Greek and trust me, Diamond is a much easier spelling than the full name.

Diamond girl, you sure do shine
Glad I found you, glad you’re mine

Oh my love, you’re like a precious stone
Part of earth where heaven has rained on
Makes no difference where you are
Day or night time, you’re like a shinin’ star
How could I shine without you
When it’s about you that I am?

The Start Of Roy Orbison Singles

I have a ton of Roy’s singles, on top of two full LPs that have been posted before. I’ll be spreading the singles out over this week so we’ll have an Orbison week! Feel free to use the tags at the bottom of this post to check out the LPs and his work with other groups.

Roy Kelton Orbison (April 23, 1936 – December 6, 1988), also known by the nickname the Big O, was an American singer-songwriter.

He grew up in Texas and began singing in a rockabilly/country and western band in high school until he was signed by Sun Records in Memphis. His greatest success came with Monument Records between 1960 and 1964, when 22 of his songs placed on the Billboard Top 40. His career stagnated through the 1970s, but several covers of his songs and the use of “In Dreams” in David Lynch’s film Blue Velvet (1986) revived his career.

In 1988, he joined the supergroup Traveling Wilburys with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Jeff Lynne and also released a new solo album. He died of a heart attack in December that year, at the zenith of his resurgence.

Orbison was initiated into the second class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. The same year he was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Songwriters Hall of Fame two years later. In 2014, Orbison was elected to America’s Pop Music Hall of Fame.

Woody Herman’s Bijou

Woodrow Charles “Woody” Herman (May 16, 1913 – October 29, 1987) was an American jazz clarinetist, alto and soprano saxophonist, singer, and big band leader. Leading various groups called “The Herd”, Herman was one of the most popular of the 1930s and 1940s bandleaders. His bands often played music that was experimental for its time.

Ruby & The Romantics

Ruby & the Romantics were an Akron Ohio-based American R&B group in the 1960s. The group had several pop and R&B hit records, but are sometimes wrongly considered as a one-hit wonder for topping the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1963 with their first recording, “Our Day Will Come”. The members of the group were: Ruby Nash, George Lee, Ronald Mosely, Leroy Fann and Ed Roberts.

They were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2007, and are winners of The Rhythm and Blues Foundation’s prestigious Pioneer Award. In 1963, they were also nominated by The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for the Best Rock and Roll Recording for “Our Day Will Come”. Despite their relative obscurity compared to many of their contemporaries, Ruby and The Romantics reign as one of the most-covered and influential R&B vocal groups of the 1960s.
