Mr. Richard’s Reviews: Youssou N’Dour and Neneh Cherry – 7 Seconds

Youssou N’Dour and Neneh Cherry – 7 Seconds (written by Youssou N’Dour, Neneh Cherry, J. McVey, and J. Sharp and produced by Booga Bear and Jonny $ with additional remix by Jonny $)

This track is like a trip hop treasure.

The R&B to the Hip Hop Drop Mix is so chill and relaxing. Lyrically it’s powerful. It reminds me of Thievery Corporation so much. The electronic beeps combined with scratching and its general international sound makes “7 Seconds” incredibly beautiful. When Youssou sings in Senegalese French Creole I get so excited. Neneh Cherry’s voice is really pretty as well.

Anytime I see West African music in a crate I go for it. I am almost never disappointed. The former Portuguese colonies are my least favorite, but I can’t help but crave music from around the world. There’s something to having a record in our collection that travelled thousands of miles and was played and enjoyed by somebody else before us is totally rad.

Thank you Peter Gabriel for giving Youssou a platform for his amazing art.
