Black Uhuru: Black Sounds of Freedom

Another historic group here! I originally intended to dedicate a post to a successful or game changing black musician for a sort of Black History Month tribute but as I go through, it seems a little silly to even try and narrow it down to just one post every Monday. I just happened upon this LP from Black Uhuru in the stack of LPs waiting to be entered and brought upstairs and I’m sure there will be more that should be spotlighted!

Black Uhuru are a Jamaican reggae group formed in 1972, initially as Uhuru (Swahili for ‘freedom’). The group has undergone several line-up changes over the years, with Derrick “Duckie” Simpson as the mainstay. They had their most successful period in the 1980s, with their album Anthem winning the first ever Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 1985.
