The Original Shaft

I had picked up the remake of Shaft’s soundtrack (well, it’s not technically a remake, but you know, the newer version) before picking up the original. I kind of had a feeling the original would still be at the record store the next week and luckily, that feeling was right. I scooped this up a week or two ago and it’s really fun to listen to both versions back to back. It gives you a real sense of how music has changed.

The Shaft soundtrack album was a success, winning a Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Grammy Award for Best Original Score and a third Grammy that Isaac Hayes shared with Johnny Allen for Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement. The “Theme from Shaft” won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and has appeared on multiple Top 100 lists.
