Mr. Richard’s Reviews: Roberta Flack- Killing Me Softly With His Song

Roberta Flack- Killing Me Softly With His Song (written by Norman Gimbel and Charles Fox and produced by Joel Dorn)

This song is incredibly personal to me as the lyrics resonate through my body with Roberta’s sincere, sultry vocals. Not to deflate other versions of this song, but nothing compares to the choice off-beat arrangement that Flack delivered in 1973. Artists today, particularly independent producers and djs, strive to hit her level of harmonizing to an implied track that is not actually present. If you try and sing along, sometimes the music will throw you off, even if the lyrics are entirely memorized. For example, the popular groups Animal Collective and The Books have built their style around this way of arranging music. Animal Collective started as a noise band until their addition of more lyrics with Sung Tongs. However, nobody but Roberta Flack can sing something that sounds like it is off the top of her head. Additionally, I feel as if playing this track always brings to mind a specific person.
